The Stand Up Guys story began in 2005 when Casey Walsh, a 16-year-old high school student, started a small spring-cleaning business in Marietta, Georgia. He worked alongside his friend Carson, now the company’s director of operations, with little more than a rake, a strong work ethic, and a desire to make extra money.

“At first, I was just raking lawns and cleaning small items out of people’s garages—mainly because that’s all I could handle,” Casey recalls. “But I soon realized, because of my customers and the demand for what they wanted done, that there was an opportunity and a huge need for a junk removal service in my hometown of Marietta.”

Determined to take the next step, Casey invested his savings into renting his father’s truck and trailer when they weren’t in use. This allowed him to take on bigger jobs and build a foundation for something greater.

“It seemed small to most, but to me it was a life-changing experience. I was finally sticking my neck out there and doing what I wanted to do—run my own business.” – Casey Walsh

Taking the Leap – The Birth of Stand Up Guys

For the next year, Casey continued hauling junk after school and on weekends. But after high school, he put the business on hold to explore other career paths. He worked different jobs, even valet parking at night, while saving up for college. But the desire to be his own boss never faded.

“The feeling of owning my own business, working for myself and making my own money never escaped me,” Casey admitted. “It was a blessing and a curse at the same time. Any other job I had after that paled in comparison.”

In 2007, at just 19 years old, Casey made a bold decision. Instead of using his savings for college, he invested everything into launching Stand Up Guys Junk Removal. He bought a beat-up 1984 Chevy truck—nicknamed “The Blue Bomber”—and got to work. With little money left for advertising, he painted plywood signs, spray-painted the company name and placed them at busy intersections.

Startup Challenges – Building Stand Up Guys From the Ground Up

The first few years were tough. The “Blue Bomber” was unreliable, broke down often, and money was tight. Casey relied on his handmade signs and flyers for marketing and handled every aspect of the business himself—answering calls, managing schedules and hauling junk.

Despite the struggles, hard work and dedication paid off. Customers appreciated Stand Up Guys’ professionalism, fair pricing and commitment to excellent service. The word spread and business began to grow.

“I knew that these were just growing pains and that I needed to fight through it to get to where I dreamed Stand Up Guys could be.” – Casey Walsh

After saving enough, he purchased a new dump truck—nicknamed Dumpatron—and the team was able to triple their workload. This was a turning point, allowing Stand Up Guys to increase efficiency, offer lower prices and take on more customers.

Building a Crew – The Heart of Stand Up Guys

With business booming, Casey needed a dedicated team. He brought on Carson and Pepper, two of the original crew members, who worked alongside him for years, learning every aspect of the business. Rather than hiring outside managers, Stand Up Guys focused on promoting from within, building a team that truly understood and reflected the company’s values.

“The Stand Up Guys crew just continued to take care of our customers, go the extra mile, and live up to our name on every single job,” Casey explained. “And our customers continued to be more and more impressed with us. In return, they’d tell their friends and family all about this nice little company with a cute name that they called ‘The Stand Up Guys.’ Now that’s how the word around town really began to spread.”

During the early years, the crew noticed how much of what people discarded wasn’t actually junk. Instead of sending everything to the landfill, they began donating furniture, appliances and household items to charities and families in need.

“We quickly realized that so much of what people threw away wasn’t always ’junk,’ but things that we could give back to some who needed it. We found out that the saying ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ was the real deal.” – Casey Walsh
